The Shell Express Newsletter is created by the Sea Shell Shop and sent to persons who joined and are interested in stories, history and general information about nautical gifts, lighthouses, shells and hermit crabs. It provides interesting information about related subjects and possible links to other interesting sites full of similar information.

It also provides updates on what is available on the Sea Shell Shop site. Our only catalog is our on line catalog. If you mail us your address we will add it to our list for our future catalog that we are working on for 2001.

1) HERMIT CRAB CHANGING AND MOLTING

I get a number of emails with questions about hermits and it seems the number one question is what to do when your hermit needs to change shells and how do I know my hermit is molting. 
Hermits often will stay in their shell until the very last minute of change. They are comfortable, like an ole' shoe. If you provide several (5 or more shells) he will definitely change. He probably has already tried the new when you were sleeping. They can be clever that way. You can not make them do it. They do it all by themselves. You can make sure the new shells you provide are clean, and maybe even moist inside. This will encourage them BUT you can't force them. Some crabs wait way to long to change I guess it is the ole' shoe they just love.

Now for the molting. They do become very lethargic. They do become pink. They do drop their outer shell skin which looks exactly like a dead hermit. Do not remove that exoskeleton as they eat it. You should not move your hermit when he starts this process. He needs to be left alone in the sand not stones. Make sure there is water dish in the cage. He might come up and drink during the process. If you suspect your hermit has not made it through the process or just do not know if hermie is alive, you can always tell by the smell. Live hermits do not smell like dead fish. This is a difficult time for hermie and you and you want to help but you can't. Just keep his cage at a warm temperature 70 degrees, provide a dish of water he can get in and food to eat. He'll manage the rest. They are very vulnerable at this time so keep your eye on him. They usually molt once or twice a year. If he last lost a leg or claw he will grow another so this is a good thing. It takes from one to three weeks so be patient. If you do not have the calcium bath then add a little supplement Calcium power to his food or even ground up egg shells work. That will make his outer shell harden quicker. Sea Fan is also a good idea as it is just like a vitamin to him. Remember to go back to our site a read all the information. It has been updated.
