This is the first lighthouse in America completed by the federal government, as well as the first light tower in Maine. Its first keeper, Joseph Greenleaf, was appointed by George Washington.
West Quoddy Head Lighthouse

The 49' red and white tower rises 83' above the water to guide vessels along the coast of Maine. It replaced an earlier light station that Thomas Jefferson had previously ordered to be built.
