Pirate Treasure Coins
Pirate Silver Cob - 1560-1750
Spanish Gold or silver was a favorite pirates booty. Spanish gold doubloon was worth around seven weeks pay for the sailors of ships. Old Spanish pesos or Silver pieces of eight, were cut into pieces to make small change. The silver mines of Mexico were the source for the first silver coins or cob of the new world. They were rich with silver for that time. The sailors turned Pirates would divide up the booty among the crew including the Captain. The spoils or treasure could add up to $200,000 to $500,000 or more. Often they took the form of bars, plate, goblets, church crosses, jewels, silver and gold coins and so much more. Today the value would be over well 300 to 500 million. Much of it has never been found according to the records. There are a few records of many buried treasure and secret maps still in the navigational books. Pirates were known to come ashore by night to hide their treasures on remote islands. Nags head was one of there favorites. They also used an old smugglers trick by anchoring the contraband in barrels and weighting them with heavy stones to the seabed's and atolls later to return for their loot. On many maps X marks the spot is really how they were showing their buried loot. Many of those actual maps still exist. Many treasures have never been found but the legends continue. One such treasure found was on Gardners Island on the Eastern tip of New York on Long Island. The treasure was all recovered or was it? Is it true of fiction? Does such treasure still exist? We many never really know unless of course it is found.
Spanish Main (The New World), Pirate Heaven

They contained the treasure of the Aztec and Inca peoples and the silver mines of Peru and Ecuador. With this enormous wealth, the Spanish began shipping this fortune through the Caribbean and back across the Atlantic to Spain. The value of the cargo exceeded millions and millions of dollars in gold and silver. When Sir Francis Drake raided Nombre de Dios in 1572 he seized 15 tons of gold and thousands of pieces of eight.
