Nautical Ship Lights - Brass Ship's Lamps - Brass was the material of choice for ship's instruments and fittings. Over time, brass ship's lamps acquire an ever more attractive patina. Sailing ships and steamers carried a nearly infinite variety of different types of ship's lamps on board. Anchor lamps, hold lamps, galley lamps, bulkhead lamps, masthead lamps, position lamps, signal lamps, hurricane lamps, globe lamps, mess lamps, flood lamps, etc. Our of this wide variety of ship's lamps we have chosen a few. Our selection was based on design, practicality of use, sturdiness of construction, and ease in modifying for electric use. Ship Light (18.5"H) | Ship Light (12.5"H) | Ship Light (9"H) | The Anchor Lamp Every ship at anchor had to light one or two anchor lights at night, to warn other ships navigating in the same location. An anchor lamp typically has a 360 degree light radius and must be visible from 2 miles for small and 3 miles for large vessels. Note the exceptional quality of this reproduction, including the solid brass cast handle. | Scientific Lamps There are two watches aboard ship, the Port and Starboard watches. One watch is always on duty and the other off, except in situations when "All Hands" are required. Each watch is on duty for four hours, except from 4 to 8pm, which is divided into two watches of two hours each, called Dog Watches. The Dog Watches allow the watches to be changed every day so that each watch gets a turn of eight hours rest at night. | |
